A Couple of Questions on Lowering My Mk2
« on: 15 March 2008, 18:44 »
Hi,

I'm a bit of a mk2 newbie - well an all round car newbie really - I've only recently picked up my first car which is a 1.3 5dr 1988 Black Mk2.

I'm no expert mechanic but I'm not scared to get my hands dirty and I have already fixed a few simple problems the car had and it now drives very nicely. Had to change all the break pads and the rear break cylinders, and there was an apparent 'blow' on the front pipe, which got REALLY bad after a couple of weeks of driving which forced me to take a look, where I found there was no blow at all, but there was also no exhaust clamp onto the manifold, so I basically had no exhaust, hahaha. I fixed that now, and have what I think could be a nice example of a mk2 (with a bit of rust treatment and TLC).

I was thinking of maybe lowering the car a little bit to make it look better, but I'm a bit of a newbie to what exactly would need to be changed. I'm not looking on a massive drop, but maybe something like 40mm?

Could I just change the springs or would I need to change the struts aswell? The car as it stands is completely standard. And I don't really care about quality (to an extent) or performance because we're only talking about a 1.3 here so I'm not going to any racetracks in it, ha. So just the cheapest solution to dropping the car a bit, making it look a bit better.

Cheers all, all comments welcome :).

hi mate i would just fit springs if you only what cheap job,  but if shocks are old and ropey be best to do lot, you can get coilovers for 150 pounds not bad quality for the price!!

Cheers, yeah I noticed I could get springs for cheap. I guess I've gotta decide how bad the shocks are really... what mm drop would you advise?

I can't be arsed with a seriously low car, one that scrapes when its full and 1mph over speed bumps, just something that will look a bit sportier and still be useable.

Pays your money and get a coilover kit, then you can have it at what height you want. I think 60mm is good on a 1.3.
