Mk2 Pas belt, How do I loosen it?
« on: 15 March 2008, 15:13 »
Mk2 GTi 16v 92

I've undone the tensioning bolt and attached bolt in the tensioner, the bolt on the rear swivel and the bolt on the top swivel, but the pump doesn't want to move (I managed to move it a little but no more) am I missing something? Some other bolt?

It's maddening as I need to change the alternator belt, but have to get this one off first...

No ideas at all?

From what I can tell the pump is attached on one side to a bracket that's attached to the tensioning bracket & front swivel.
On the other the other side there is just one bolt attaching the pump to the rear swivel.

If this is correct I can only assume that it's binding on something, but can't tell what.

Currently looks like I'm going to have to think about undoing the read swivel (and maybe the front swivel) and take the whole thing apart just to get the stupid belt off!

two bolts. First one at the top to the left and the second at the bottom with a funny nut with grooves on. I had to hit mine with a hammer to move it as it aint been moved in years i guess. While thats off change the alternator belt as well as you can only change it when the pas belt is off.

Hmm, that doesn't seem to match what I've seen, will see if I can find a photo or schematic.

The alternator belt is the only reason I want to get the PAS belt off (but intend to change both at the same time).

Yes, think I will apply the hit it with a hammer idea, after getting a more suitable hammer.

Ok, I discovered that the pump was also bolted at the top on the rear swivel (where you can't get to the bolt very easily.

According to my interpretation of the schematic, it shouldn't be bolted there, any one know for sure? (If you're not clear where I'm talking about I'll post photo's)

Well I've removed it, just waiting for the rain to stop and I'll carry on with the job.

there are lots of bolts you have to loosen, including at least one between the pump & block.  Just keep lossening stuff till it moves, then remember to tighten em all back up again!
