hi!
« on: 10 March 2008, 05:39 »
hey guys,

just joined up to get some advice really. Im looking to buy a mk3 GTI (preferably 8v as its cheaper on insurance) 3 door...

I am basically just after some advice of what to look for when buying? ive been a ford owner since i started driving (4 years ago) so dont really know much about vws! are they rust prone? what the engines/gear boxes like? problems with paint/lacqure? electrics? are there any specific problems to the mk3s and 8 valvers in particular that i should be aware about n keep an eye out for?

any help would be extreamly appriciated! lookin to buy in the next couple of weeks!!

welcome.

Good choice on looking for a Golf.

With the Mk3 watch out for dodgy electrics;
abs errors (some people just disconnect the ABS light to stop an error showing, the light should go on when you start the engine, and then go off. If it doesn't go off, or doesn't go on at all, probably means an error and a repair needed, don't believe the "just needs a bulb" excuse.
electric windows are prone to faults.
16v engines can be troublesome with dizzy's and stalling.
gearboxes can be a problem, fairly common on VWs of this age. Beware if it jumps out of 5th gear.
rust, look around the tailgate, wipers and arches.

I'm sure you'll find more tips in the Mk3 section.
