Car died then back to life the next day
« on: 08 March 2008, 14:50 »
Guy's need your advice and expertise please:

here's the full story (sorry for long one but If I miss something out it may not be as easy to diagnose)  4 (ish) months ago I had a new alarm fitted, since then i have had a few problems.....not sure if its related?

I had notice for a while it was getting progressively harder to start my car, slower turning over on starter....battery going...anyway...two months ago I got in the car to head out and it would start, I put this down to an old battery (owned the car for a few years and never changed the battery...also winter....) so got a new one and the car has been fine, starts first time and idles no problem (well except its got a piper cam and a blowing 4 branch so idles a little erratically between 800-1000rpm and makes some interesting noises )

so two months happy motoring, then I go away for a week, came home, got in car and nothing!! nothing at all, a few lights on the dash but no more, no electrical buzz or anything.

called out an auto electrician....no help at all....messed about a bit and gave me a bunch of bull....dont worry I didnt pay him as I knew he was full of it!

so I took all the components out of the dash to get at the wiring and disconnect an old hand free kit that stopped working at some stage in the last few months. (Oh yea AIRBAG WARNING light came on at some stage out of the blue too...have a momo steering wheel but a resistor kit has stopped that coming on for 3 years so why that suddenly happed is also a mystery??!!!) got the kit out no problems, check all wiring , cable tied it all neatly back there and put the car back together....meanwhile I was charging the battery overnight....battery still showed as no-1/2 charge 24 hours later..

ok so here's the main part!!-

I take the battery back under warrenty for exchange...they guy checked the battery and say's its charged and nothing wrong with it...HOWEVER for my car I should maybe have the size larger than the one THEY sold me....I happily paid the difference and went home to attach new larger battery....CAR started first time!!

head out drive 10 miles...pull up to destination, engine stops...dash lights still on, no power anything or engine running, turn key, car starts again. think nothing of it....park car....come back to car press alarm, turn key...nothing...try again...nothing....4 times nothing so take key out press alarm again and try...starts.............strange.

ok drive home and around a bit 20 miles no problem.

that night going out to pick up friends with Mrs.....5 miles down the road....stopping starting, high sped low etc.....going along...slowing to 20mph....DIES again lights still on no engine or power steering brakes etc.....still moving try and turn key.....nothing but electrically buzzing sound....coast into parking spot (LUCKY!!) tried 20-30 times over 10 mins same every time buzzing, starter motor not turning...tried alarm over and over setting and turning off over and over trying to start again etc...NOTHING.  head home by friends car.

go back thins morning with tools AA card and starts first turn!!! WTF please help this is driving me nuts ^^ hence the essay!

cheers

Dan

No ideas then guys?

I am thinking it has to be electrical and most likely the immobilizer kicking in in error....faulty alarm setup, this is also draining the battery?? what do you recon?
