if it cuts out: ITS THE THROTTLE VALVE CONTROL!!!
« on: 07 April 2004, 12:54 »
Sorry to be a whinger but all we seem to get on here at the moment is a million different posts about the same thing - 'MY GOLF CUTS OUT'.

If everyone can just scan the golf guides at the top, and maybe other peoples post they will get the answer there rather than posting the same old repetitive post that seems to multiply everyday.

Cuts out= dirty throttle controls full of carbon = clean out = cheap = not a big problem.

Its just the the forum is getting very repetitive with the same old crap.

Anyone got anything new to say?!  ???

p.s My golf runs just fine if that makes anyone feel better  ;)

how come other people have said its 1) relays 2) ignition coil.

how can you be sure its a magic bullet solution for everyone?

my car hasnt been spluttering since i had it fixed last week, and all thats been done is the ignition coil... (and a new starter)

however, i do want to clean the throttle body, i asked the garage fixing my car to do it but they didnt have time.

Pimpster,

Clearly a lot of people are having this cutting out problem, in various forms with varying symptoms. Therefore it is a valid topic for discussion in an effort to reslove these problems.

I am not sure if one fix suggestion will in fact cure every single cutting out problem - surely that is what these forums are here for - for people to find out how others have fixed it???

Incidentally, did this fix your cutting out problem?

Seem to be loads of slightly different problems and cures.  Maybe a list of symptoms and cures would be useful so people can try them all before posting repeat problems.  Answers are a bit hard to find with these threads spread all over.

p.s i haven't had any cutting out problems so far.  So don't ask me to put my money where my mouth is and write the thing. ;D

A brief and basic guide based on the suggestions so far should be as follows:

1.) Get fault codes read for any logged probs (approx. ?35)
2.) Replace ECU & fuel pump relays (?10 or ?15 each on average)
3.) Clean throttle body out (free if DIY, poss ?50 at garage?)
4.) Should show up on fault read?....Coil pack replacement (?40 +)
5.) Should show up on fault read?....Crank sensor replacement (?120 +)
6.) Should show up on fault read?....Distributor replacement (?200)

After this, god knows! I have done 4/6 of the above and still have the problem, so clearly one fix does not the problem!

^ just out of interest which of the above have you done?

plus my two penneth worth...

the reason i took my car out "for a burn" the day it died, and i subquently had to be rescued was because it was idling REALLY lumpy, and the day before i had stalled... since coil replacment its been fine.  coil was about 60 quid plus labour.. around 130 quid total.

The things I did, in the order I did them are as follows:

Replaced coil (2nd-hand part though, old one melted!)
Had fault code read - no faults logged
Changed relays
Had dizzy replaced (for hall sender)
Cleaned throttle butterfly (didn't have time to remove throtle body - will do this w/end)

A plastic-y burning smell was accompanied by some black oozing from my coil when it died too.

Incidentally, if anyone does have a coil pack reach this stage of meltdown on them - don't touch the ooze, even when cool: RAC man was affraid to touch it, incredibly toxic apprently!

I think the point has been taken a little to literally.

basically before going 'er, whats the problem?' how about looking at the other posts, trying the solutions given as a lot of posts on here do state they have the same symptoms, and then when you've tried all the other solutions post then. better than everyone stating the same thing.

personally all this forum seems to be about at the moment is coughing, spluttering and stalling.
