My GTI order - am I making a terrible mistake?

I ordered my GTI mid-January and it's scheduled to be built around mid-March and delivered early April.  I have wanted a GTI for ages but this week I have had to resist calling my dealer to cancel the order.

The Mk6 is due late 2008 or early 2009 and a few friends have said that as soon as the Mk6 is available the value of my GTI would plummet (obviously).  And what if the Mk6 GTI turns out to be a belter?  I could spend 2 years wishing I had waited before committing a serious amount of money!  For arguments sake, if the Mk6 is available early 2009, when would the Mk6 GTI typically be available, mid/late 2009?

Everyone has doubts when making a large purchase, I guess I'm just going through a phase of thinking I'm making a terrible decision.  And to end my post, I'll finish it with some more questions.  Am I a mug for buying a Mk5 GTI at this moment in time?  Would you wait?

i would by second hand. But should you choose to not cancel your order you will find that the gti will not be one of the first models of the Mk6 to be released. So either way.... its all good in the Gti club

You can wait and wait and wait and wait for the next thing, car, object, Plasma, mobile phone.

There will always be a new one around the corner. The new GTI will be at least 12+ months after the car is launched anyway.

Its your money as they saying goes. My MKiv didn't loose that much money after the MKv came out as I planned to keep it for a while.

Buying a new car is not an investment, and you have to realise that when buying any brand new car you will lose money the moment you drive it out the showroom. If your looking to avoid large scale depreciation then don't buy a brand new car from a main dealer.

I'm sure there will be some discounts available on the Mk5 GTI's a month or two before the new ones are released but thats the same with everything, so you can spend forever waiting for the right time or you can just buy it and enjoy yourself.

If you look at the Mk 4 golf, I dont think they dropped that greatly when the Mk 5 was released and the Mk 5 was the most critically acclaimed golf gti since the original.

From what I've seen of the Mk 6 it doesn't look that different in styling to the Mk 5. Plus you have to remember the reason the Mk 5 is being replaced so quickly is because it costs to much to build so the Mk 6 is likely to be a Mk 5 with lower quality levels.

Only you can decide, if your going to spend the next two months worrying then cancel your order and buy a second hand one thats already suffered a chunk of depreciation.

Stick with it. I have mine just 2 months now and don't regret buying it one bit. The Mk5 GTi is proven to be a fantastic car which will be almost impossible to improve on. You will always lose money with cars, that's just the way it is. Waiting won't change that fact.

And have you seen pictures of the Mk6?

And the Mk6 GTi could turn out to be a lemon....

...and if it is any good, sell the Mk5 when the time comes and get a Mk6.

From what I've seen the MKVI is really a facelifted MKV anyway. Under the skin it will be made more efficiently (probably also cheaply) and so I wouldn't worry unduly. VW deliberately waited a year between the launch of the MKV and the launch of the GTI to give it more of a high profile and I suspect that they will do the same with the MKVI. It is pure speculation at the moment for the arrival of the MKVI, but I'd hedge bets on an early 2009 launch and a 2010 launch for the GTI using (probably) the same power as the Cupra.

Your car (mARK 5 GTi), will be worth no less when the Mark 6 comes out, there is not a massive drop as people think there is.

It just does not happen, the reason are this.

When a new car is Launched you get some people that must have the latest car to hit the road, and can afford to buy it.

But for your average joe they cant, so they opt for the best of the rest your Mark 5 Gti.

Also when the Mark 5 was Launched, i had people every day saying i dont like it, i'll never buy one of those.

I dont know you, i dont know where you are getting your car, but it will have no effect ( other than normal depreciation), on the currant Mark 5 price.

Stick with it, and remember as of yet there is no Date for the Mark 6, what if its two years away.

The Mk5 GTI is a superb car.  The MK6 is totally unknown.

I was thinking the same when I ordered mine last year.  I've had it for nearly 4 months now and not regretted it.  I would stick with the order.  It would probably be better to wait a year or two after the MK6 GTI is released anyway so that all the problems are ironed out.  There's usually always something wrong with a new model.

If you are still unsure then you could always get yourself a used car.  I'm sure there are good deals out there for 1-2 year old GTIs.

go for a 1year old GTi, bag yourself a real bargain. save the major depreciation, just picked one up today with 6k off last years price with 960 miles on the clock with Very spec.
you wont be disapointed with the Mk5. im now gonna be on my 2nd one in 18 months. Tryed something else but it just doesnt make you smile when you turn the key.
Go with your heart and not with your wallet!. lol. worry about that bit later!

MKV right now,.....why pay over the odds on a new car thats as yet untested...look the way the mk4 got slated by the critics, same could happen with this...the mk5 will hold its value in the face of the new car. Appreciate your thinking though I had the same thoughts with the mini...had an S then went shy on the car waiting the new version, result, landed in deep dead-dad-car land of the diesel A6 for 18 months whilst i made up my mind...what a mistake, get a mk5 dont waste any more time thinking about it.  There will always be a big market for a quality car.
