gti into standard 1.4
« on: 05 April 2004, 15:58 »
Hi all I have an mk3 1.4 golf and a gti engine+box has come into my hands from one of my more careless friends, anyway I was wondering how hard it would be to change over the two engines and what it would take. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

its gonna cost ya .. ya cant just stick an engine and gearbox in a car and say yey it runs great.

U'll have to do these

Upgrade the brakes
Upgrade the suspension
Upgrade the tyres/wheels

... and prolly other stuff to. ... the 1.4 has very saggy titty suspension!

All the other mods have been done or have the parts and waiting to be done, your right about the suspension standard is sh!t. The engine is a 16 valve i belive, i will be picking it up later this week. Is it worth doing? i dont have much expirence in vw as iv always been a mk1 escort man, do i need to get special mounts etc.

like black_gti said over the 1.4 (and the 8v) the 16v has traction control, along with ABS as standard.. so some other upgrades are a must.

afaik you shouldnt need any special mounts.

not sure about the electrical system stuff..

wouldn't worry about traction control too much.  ABS would be a nightmare to fit i would imagine but you could live without it if you upgraded the brakes.  I assume the 1.4 had drums on the back?  These will be a bit out of their depth with the extra power.  I think a disc conversion is fairly easy but might cost a bit.  Mind you the rear brakes don't really get that involved on golfs.

Has it got PAS?  You need PAS.

Also, only do this conversion if it's a 16v.  The 8v won't be noticably faster than the 1.4. ;)

p.s that's a joke.  Ask Black_Gti for the performance figures.  He's got lots.

2.0 litre  150 bhp / 0-60 in around 8 seconds. believe vw official time is 8.7 seconds.

 8)

16v = 8.7
8v = 10.2
VR6 = 7.4
1.4 = 16ish (I used to have a Match 1.4)
