Top mounts
« on: 05 April 2004, 15:30 »
I changed my front top mounts a year ago (almost to the day!) and when filling the screenwash the other day I noticed there was about half an inch of free play between the top cup and the shock tower, I had noticed the ride being a bit more clunky than normal recently.
Surely top mounts should last more than a year??? or is there supposed to be some slack between cup and body (I would have thought not though). Help!

There is supposed to be a small gap between the cup and body, but it should be minimal.
Where did you get the mounts from? GSF?
Can you stick your finger between the cup and the body?

Mounts came from vw specialist in Cambridge, but they are the Febi ones. I can just about get my index finger between cup and body. Is that bad?

Can you post a pic?
It doesn't sound too bad, but if they get any worse then you should change them.
GSF supply 'febi' mounts as well, some have proved not to be 'o.e.' quality.

tim styles said ''the rule of finger is if you can get it between the top bit and the tower they need replacing''.. and he said ''always use genuine parts'' for that!

Cheers for that, looks like I have got my easter weekend sorted out! Will use VAG bits this time, see if they last more than a year!

What year is your Mk3? Are the struts original?

You might be able to switch for a VR6 set(bearings and bushings), they're much stronger,  worth looking into.
