cheers m8, i had the bumpers and front arches and grill done already. Bonnet is ok, its the doors, and back panels which need redoing. Bonnet is fine, but i will just wrap it in black vinyl if it looks gash after the rest is resprayed. I would think about doing it, but its just i will probs be selling end of the year. I might do it anyway, as it would be a great learning experience and if it goes well, then it will defo be a selling point, that it has had a full respray! It would look really mint then! People dont like it when they can see rust and faded/sh!te paintwork; they just walk away and you lose your sale, or get the sale for a much lower price.

Well...... looks like i will have to see if i can get it a place to do it. Think were getting in spray gun hoses, etc at work, so will be able to borrow all the equipment. I wont be doing bumpers, etc. Did you leave everything on the car then, doors closed and just sprayed the outer part of the car? this is what i would do, but not sure.

I am going to go see a m8 who knows what they are talking about next weekend, he did my azevs, and see what he says. Got a few dents and a couple rust patches that need sorting, other than that its just sanding down, prime and paint. Will assess the bodywork that needs doing first and get that sorted, prime it up and then paint. Will plan it out first though and get all the bits ready to go.

no rm splits unfortunately, 16" ones, not 100% what they are, but they look like RXII maybe, like what shady p has.

I think i will finish off the 1.4, getting it looking exactly as i want it and then sell for a gti. It would have been a good starting base and i have learned lots, which i can take forward and use to make the gti even better!

ooo and if the refurb of the bbs splits goes well then if i can get a set of ra's v cheap that are in bad condition; refurn them and put them on the 1.4 as the finishing touch!

when i did the respray i took all the panels off, (apart form the boot hath as it easier to leave it on and you could easily do the inside anyway. i removed all the windows and seals and sprayed it right up to the inner most part that would be covered by a seal. with the arches i just took them off and reprayed the whole thing and likewise with the bonnet (although it was easier to prep whilst it was on the car so i took it off just before). Its hard work but worth it, i think if your getting rid of it though dont bother, as its quite time consuming and expensive in paint and you'll loose money rather than gain it? if you've got one panel thats sh!t try that and see how you feel becasue when you start getting dents and rust and dented rust holes and the like it become major ball ache as getting the filler flat is a skill in itself that i had to quickly learn!

really the only parts that NEED respraying are the back quarter panels.

I've got 'illegal' plates but have been ok so far, MOT next week though so may have to put the originals back on, everyone else just assumes it's a German car!

well found out yesterday that my head gasket has been on its way out for almost a year. i asked a few of m8s why it was doing this and that and they didnt know, so i just ignored it, until yesterday. i had to help my m8 jumpstart his car and one of my other m8s noticed that steam was coming out of my oil breather and under the oil cap on the rocker cover, was orange foamy stuff, ahhhhhhhh he said, head gasket.

great, but i said its been like that for ages, but only recently has been losing quite a bit of water. well apparently its going to go soon then!

sooo, gunna drop another 1.4 AEX in there for now, that should be a straight forward swap. Still looking at putting a better engine in though, not sure what yet. I've been through so many different engine ideas   ohh thanks to rmachines for basically answering every Q, my PM inbox is like a conversion guide lol

Well onto other news and got new tyres coming for my Azevs, thinner ones, 195's so hopefully that will reduce a bit of rub. if not, then roll the arches.

now, the car has quite bad paintwork/bodywork tbh. there are a couple dents and both rear quarters are sh!te. minimal rust though, i mean i havent found any major rust, which is good news. sooo a respray is in the cards, but a full respray in original color isnt really worth the hassle or the money, sooooo, rattle can matt paint it is then!

Was thinking a simple black or camo green. dont want to do matt yellow or blue or red really. But respraying it like this means i dont need to worry about scratches, etc, as its sooo easy to touch up, even a dent you can fill, prime then just spray, dont need to worry about it.

i might have a go at smoothing bumpers, etc too in the process of doing this. will look phat with smoothed body, the wide offset azevs in matt black or camo green. especially awesome if it had a 1.8t mmmmmmmmmm :D

its only a 1.4 cl, and i was going to run it into the ground anyway, so lets have fun on the way down!!!!!
