DSG S&M!
« on: 27 February 2008, 10:14 »
Hi All,

How do you get the best out of driving with DSG?

I have found that in S I want to shift up before it hits the red as have used most of the power in that particular gear and also don’t want to rev the nuts of it too much! When I intervene with the paddles in S mode it then goes back to manual so is there a difference in using the paddles in S mode to using them in standard manual mode. What works best for you? Do you also find in S that you want to shift up just before the red? By the way I love the down shifts in S!!

When you take control using the paddles it gives you 20 or 30 seconds of manual control. If during that time you don't use the paddles again then it will revert back to Auto mode.

If however you want to retain manual mode push the gear lever across to manual. It will then stay in manual mode and you can then change gear using the paddles or the gearstick, whichever you prefer.

When I read the topic title I was slightly concerned, mental images of nipple clamps attached to the dsg paddles.

are you asking whether there's a difference when using the paddles when the gear lever is in D or S? i haven't actually noticed myself, but i would've thought that once you activate the paddles and it switches automatically to manual, it wouldn't matter whether you're in D or S...?

do you also find that in D it shifts up way too quickly and never seems to want to shift down unless you're almost coming to a stop? and as you say, in S mode it only shifts up just before the redline, regardless how hard you're pushing it, but it does downshift more easily.

based on my slightly longer experience with the steptronic system in BMs, they seem to take into consideration how hard you're pushing it when deciding when to shift up/down.

and we can do what we want when we want if we want....

Do the DSG boxes not adapt to your style of driving though? sure I read that in a couple of places.

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

I'm not aware of them being adaptive like the BMW boxes.

D setting will try and use the most economical gear for the car.

S setting will try to avoid letting your revs drop below 4000rpm.

If you take manual control then it is fully up to you what gear you are in and D and S have no bearing on events. The only thing to be aware of is that it will always change you up a gear once you start redlining to avoid engine damage.

Don't take cover, I am on your side. :-)
Also, with manual you can get more torques after a remap.
