MOT FAIL - door opening etc...
« on: 26 February 2008, 15:58 »
Hi guys, my car failed its MOT on a list of things today! One being thay the passenger door cannot be opened from the outside.

What would be the most likely cause of this? handle, some internal linkages or the mech itself? Bearing in mind that the door can be opened fine from the inside.

(one bit of extra info, someone tried to break in around that handle before i bought it).

If it is the handle, anyone got one I can buy?!

It also failed on bulging break lines at the front any ideas if this is normal?

Another fail was stop lights not coming on, and rear indicator being wrong colour!

There are more, but I want to address these first.

Cheers

Ger

Handle - Strip it off and clean it all up, may do the trick as they're not used often and can get sticky.

Break pipes - This'll be your flexi pipes to the calipers. Very common on most cars. THe rubber persihes and the pipes start to baloon under pressure. Change em (With braided ones if you can afford it) and job's a gooden.

Stop lights - Not sure but I wuld guess there's a microswitch on the peddle box for the brake lights. Check this is working. If it is just start working your way around the wiring till you find where the 12v is no longer there. Bit of a pig so hopefully the switch is the problem.

Tell tale - What lenses you got on it? Probably just needs a new bulb.

change the handle on the passender side, the arm that operates the lock mech will have either snapped off completely, or cracked(usually a commo prob with ECP and GSF handles) easy fix tbh,

as horney said with the brake lines and brake lights.

orange bulb for the indicators.

easy peasy.

and daniel, no that shouldnt fail i dont think, mine was fully de-locked at one point had its mot and it passed, so both passenger door and drivers door were de-locked. admittedly it had central locking and remote locking, but im sure the passenger side doesnt need to have a lock.

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!

It should fail for the door handle. As a rule of thumb MOT wise, if it's fitted it has to work. If you have no door handles they can't test them. If you do have them, they have to work.

All you need is a screw driver, some chalk, a brick wall and a mates car for that one.

cheers for the replies, I will try the chalk idea tomorrow!

I have bought some orange nail varnish and colourd my faded bulb back in (I went to buy bulbs from halfords but the didnt have orange ones with non offset bayonet)

I also need welding around the floor plan where it joins the seat belt (passenger side).

As for the door handle, can anyone tell me how you remove them? i did a search but couldnt find a how-to.

Thanks for the tips

Ger

There are 2 screws to remove the door handle: one is in the door shut area, hidden behind the rubber rain seal; the other is under the trim on the outside of the handle. Unscrew these and slide the handle forward slightly and pull off.
