Debating Topic- Opel Astra GTC vs Golf GTi

Hi Hi

I have a friend at school who is under the impression that his Opel Astra GTC will take my GTi off the road.
To my shock and horror I found out that the GTC is a bloody diesal  !!!

Looked up a few things on the net and cant seem to find a comparison test.
The annoying thing about my friend is he seems to think Opels are awesome and that the GTi is slow.

So lets debate this one please. Im getting annoyed now. Constantly hearing about fast Opels etc.
When I say GTi I mean the stock GTi not the Ed30.

Opinions anyone? If Hurdy can get 5.66 seconds for his 0-60 times then a GTi could get similar. Maybe 6.5 seconds?

I have been told that the Factory quoted times are- 0-100KM in 7.6 seconds.
I heard that the GTC really battles to put its power down.
Although I must admit its a stunning car.

So which car is going to win? Astra GTC or GTi? And lets do this by the paper and not by "driver skill".

Do you have any specs for the Astra? Fastest diesel Astra i can find specs for in the UK is 150ps and does 0-60 in 8.3.

The reason you won't find a comparison test is because the GTI is LEAGUES above any crappy diesel astra. They often compare it to the Astra VXR.. but then that has 100ps more than the diesel.

The Astra GTC Im talking about seems to be a 1.9 litre diesel.... Which technically a 2.0 litre turbocharged Golf should destroy?

Right? lol

There is also a petrol version of the GTC with a 2.0 litre engine though. Should I be worried?

Well, Astra OPC is a real racer, for sure. It handles better than GTI (don't mind some torque steer), it looks more agressive (never mind those ST-replica rims). But inside it is only made for the driver, the center console is terrible in its gray plastic (or mirror black plastic, no difference, still crap), board comp and radio are made by Nazis to make you go nuts... It's too much of a compromise.

the 2.0T seems the equivalent of the VXR we get in the UK, only with 50 less bhp..

as you can see from the 0-100kmh times on that specsheet, none of those astras are even close to the GTI.

i think your astra GTC in South Africa may be the same as the 888 astra diesel here in UK which is 200bhp and tons of torque.

I am honestly not sure. I didnt realise there was a difference.

Opel Astra GTC: 0.100 = 7.8
Golf GTi: 0.100 = 7.2

And even better ha ha:

Golf GTi DSG: 0.100 = 6.9 seconds 

Shame. Poor guy took the loss well. But I have to agree with what he says.

The Opel Astra GTC sound similar to a VR6 and that sound is awesome and lets face it. I think the GTC would be more fun to drive.

Opel GTC: The Gentlemans son who is ADHD deficient and suggers from verbal diarea  aka. The madman in the crowd.
