Help needed!!!!!!!!
« on: 24 February 2008, 20:00 »
Had my mk2 a good while now car has been left for a while in my front garden and the dorr membrane on the passenger side ripped and has completely soaked my carpet in stagnant water , I have everything out that is needed to be removed to take the carpet out apart from the centre console, I have remove the screw attached to the selector box and the two, one on either side of the centre console am I missing another screw? the other problem is that my car has this mul-t-lock reverse gear lock thing sticking out of the centre console and I am not sure if the console will clear the lock but the reason I am posting is because I feel that even though I know the lock might be resztricting the movement of the console I also feel that something else might be holding it back and the lock thing is a pain in the hole to remove, any ideas guys? Thanks Rob

There should only be 3 screws, one below the gear stick gaitor, and one either side on the lower dash sections. I'm not sure what lock you're talking about, but on mine you can remove the centre console with ease, with the stick and gaitor still attached. Undo screws, slide back and lift.

I feel your pain on the mouldy carpets, my passenger door membrane is torn and over the past 2 months its collected a small pond with its very own wildlife in the rear passenger footwell  I used a cup and spoon to scoop the majority of the water out, and I will steam clean the carpet - I cba removing the carpets again (not the first time this has happened).

This was a good time for me...

Which leads to nice and clean and dry :D but the carpets took about 4/5 days to air dry!

Easiest way to do it is to just stick a dehumidifier and a heater in the car for about 20 hours and you'll probably fine you'll clear the whole lot without the need to remove the carpets

That is a serious reply much appreciated thank you. Yeah I have all the necessary screws removed I am going to have to ty and remove this thing  And I have just read this:

http://www.afs-securitysystems.com/Mul-T-lock-Gear-Lock.php

Quote: "A steel bracket is fitted to the vehicle floor using shear bolts, which cannot be removed once  professionally fitted."

I dont know what I am going to do I don't use the lock it came in my car and the prick didn't even give me the lock to go with it lol. I am probably just going to have to cut off the already damaged console and angle grind the thing off and get a new centre console.

Thanks for the help Rob.

Don't know if this will help in any way but I've had to remove the ignition barrel from my motorbike before which is held in with shear bolts, I managed to drill them out. If you can get to the shear bolt you may be able to do this which would save you destroying the console to get it out!

Removing shear bolts is pretty easy, you'll find that the ones for that unit will be in the exhaust tunnel - which isn't that hard to access.

Jack the car up at the front and get it high on axle stands
Undo the 6 screws for the exhaust tunnel heat shield, then rotate it around the exhaust pipe to get it free
Looking up you'll see the retaining plate for the gear lever cup - if those shear bolts go through anywhere, that is where I imagine you'd see them. You'll find that if you grind two flats onto the shear bolt head, you can get a spanner on it to remove it (or smash a good quality socket onto it).

Failing that, you're right, you're going to have to cut the console apart and tear that bugger out.

Yeah I have already been underneath it last night, I am going to have to replace the console anyway as there is a hole for the lock thing to go through anyway. Thanks again for the help.
