Golf purchase decision...
« on: 24 February 2008, 08:46 »
Dear All,

I'm looking for some advice on which Golf to buy.  My local dealer has a very low mileage GT TDI 170 with DSG which I have on test.  The dealer tells me it is actually quicker than a Golf GTI, is this true?  I'm very impressed with the DSG gearbox but can't really afford to buy a new Golf with one in.  So my dilemma is whether to buy the diesel or a brand new GTI manual.  I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

 Cheers

 Joe

no it's not quicker. it 'feels' as quick because all the power comes as one huge lump of low down torque. you can get a bit more from the engine with a remap which will turn it into a GTI beater.. but then you can also remap a GTI and turn it into an R32 beater

....A Warm Welcome to the forum, Joe.

Because it was the only car my VW dealer had at the time with DSG, I thoroughly test drove a DSG TDI 2.0(? I think) back-to-back with a manual GTI, and on exactly the same roads. The GTI feels and is most definitely a lot faster and more responsive than the TDI. The TDI DSG is a great car, I even ordered one but changed my order the next day!

It depends what sort of driver you are and what you want a car for. If you are an enthusiast you'll always regret not getting the GTI.

like me, i thought diesel was the way to go, went for a 170 dsg Passat,(ok its an estate) after 4 months, im going back to my roots!, get the GTi, MUCH MUCH BETTER!.

Your dealer is lying through his teeth, the GT TDi is alot slower. Try the GTi dsg, much more fun.
If you have around 15-16k to play with by the sounds of it you do, look on www.volkswagen.co.uk, used cars , look for GTi with dsg and for the same money you can bag a good GTi with dsg for same money. (like im doing)

The TDI will probably be much cheaper to run, whereas the GTI will be a lot more fun.  I'd go for the GTI...

my current 170 dsg is doing town average at 32 mpg, my GTi dsg was doing 28mpg in comparison. diesel slightly more expensive, not much in it, unless you do alot of motorway cruising then the Diesel is a much better finacial decision. but in no way as much fun.

Get the .......GTI!

As I've said before

If you owned the TDI and a GTI went past in the opposite direction, would you think:-

1) glad I got a TDI with all those miles I do and the fuel consumption is better.
2) Sh!t - A GTI - I wish I'd got one now instead of being in this diesel - watching the fuel consumption every 2 mins

Whichever one you choose - decision made

....EXACTLY!!

That's exactly why I changed my order from a TDI to a GTI.

Thanks a lot for your input folks. I've decided I'll be ordering a new GTI, although not DSG as I can't run to that.  I've just sold my Mondeo ST TDCI so the petrol should be a nice change.  Can't wait!!
