MK3 2.0 8v GTI 8v strange noise

Have had a strange noise on the golf ever since i got it, its from the engine bay area and its like a chuffing, hard to explain.  Makes it sound like an air cooled campervan when under load, sounds abit like an exhaust blow.  Have had it up on the ramps at work and had someone cover the tailpipes whilst i listen but couldnt find any exhuast leaks.  It idles over perfectly smoothly and runs well, so thats gotta rule out an air leak.  Any ideas what it could be, or is it just how they sound?

Drilled the Air box this afternoon and put a direct fit pipercross element in there and the induction roar is incredible! just gotta wait for the exhaust system to arrive now

could be the flexi-pipe? does it get louder as you rev the car? mine sounds like a "chuffing noise" and its definitely the flexi-pipe

no flexi pipe on my model, all a solid system

Mine does this, i have a hole in my back box and middle box, a slit, so you might have missed this.

I might want to check my flexi pipe, add this to the bill!

I didnt think mine had a flexi-pipe, but as mine is the same model as yours mikester then maybe it has.  Though i cant see one on this diagram.

The flexi pipe goes from the throttle body to the air filter. Not on the exhaust i think they mean.

replace the flexi plastic crap with a power rohr....it makes them sound throatier, I had one on my old gti

my induction pipe has cracked, had to repair it with silicone as a temp fix

Where do you get these power roars from? I looked for replacement pipes for cooling and air on ebay, and couldnt find any!

i e-bored it when i broke the car!! and it sold for more than i paid! ...all though i really want one for this one now.. it cost me about £25 new from c&r enterprize vw place http://www.candrenterprises.co.uk/ have a look on there site as I'm sure they stock them still
