1st service question....again!
« on: 22 February 2008, 15:23 »
Appologies for yet another post to add to the thousands about 1st service issues! My car has done around 11100 miles to date on longlife oil and should be picking it up from the bodyshop next week, so I decided to book it in for the 1st service.  Now, the service light hasn't come on, but after reading some posts about servicing at 10000 miles regardless i thought i should book it in anyway.  I did manage to book it in but not without some heavy resistance from the vw staff!!!  It was as though i was commiting a crime   They kept on incisting that i wait until the service interval light comes on.  Have I done the right thing?  :undecided:

Also, they will flush out the engine for old oil before filling with new, and will clean the injectors for an extra £30.  Anyone heard of this before?  Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance

hi Stiggy,      if my experience is anything to go by, you are only 2500 miles early.  Mine had it's first longlife at 13,500. (£224).   They can re-set the computer without problem so they were probably just trying to save you money.

mine was in for the second long-life service (inspection I think it's called..and more expensive that the first interval serice) ...but they told me I should save myself money and just do another interval service...as at 30k miles it really didnt need the inspection (sounds like they just kick the tyres and look about for a few minutes and charge an extra £100)

it was nice to have a stealer try and save me money for a change!

Thanks for the replies guys and gals .  Last time i checked for the "miles to service" on the mfd, it did say approx. 2500 miles and i explained this to the staff, but either they didn't know what i was talking about or they still insisted to wait til the indicator comes on.  Surely its better for the car if i have the oil changed sooner rather than later :undecided:  Also, what do you mean by re-setting the computer? :embarassed:

Don't let 'em flush out/clean the injectors  - its a dealer 'scam' to part you from cash :)

In all probability its some nasty chemical flush that really isn't necessary? Is it on the VW service schedule? No - I thought not!

Unless your'e driving lots of motorway miles at steady revs ( :smug:), I'd always go with tiome/distance as opposed to longlife. Engine oil sholud be changed every 12 months. I personally would not buy any car that has been serviced on the longlife regime, but then I am an old git

Engine oil isn't flused during a normal change.

The computer is reset at every service and VW can change the setting from longlife to time and distance easily.

BTW, my first time/distance service cost £111 at Benfield VW, Newcastle

I had my first service done after a year though the computer said I had 20 days left and my mileage was just over 7000. Not sure if I was right to do it but I am happier knowing it is serviced every year (or 10000 miles). My service was £125 from Heritage Bristol.
