I think it's new car time for me this summer anyway - depending on how much in debt I fancy getting myself I'm considering:

MK2 16v (but worried about reliability - should I be?)
MK3 VR6
MK4 1.8 Turbo (but heard they're underpowered?)

And I do keep looking at R32s, but I'm also moving out this summer so I don't think finances will allow it!

Also this is completly unrelated but noticed it in one of the related videos on mowat's post:

Jesus that was closer than close!

Tom go with the Vr6.
Yes the Mk4 is underpowered, same bhp as a Mk3 16v in a heavier car!
Mystic Blue Mk3 16v + Black Mk5 Gti 05 plate + Peugeot 405 Mi16

Yes, but after a remap it's not so bad. Plus you'd get better MPG than the VR6.

went to a rolling road last nov when i had my saab turbo n there was 2 series 1 RS turbos there,
i was drooling all over them!
always bin my fave car!
bt dissapointing on the road, one of them had the run aborted cos the operator refused to continue in case it went bang! and the other was running to rich and only got 134 bhp...........
the operators were saying its a common prob 4 them, you tune em up then a mth later theyve gone bk 2 running 2 rich!
still hav 1 thou!

yes they are twin cam 16V 101bhp standard form but rapid as hell, mine is highly modified, as i said before its 156bhp, as a comparison, in a straight line race it kept well in front of a 205 bhp 2.9 VR6 engines MK 2 golf, and also completely wiped the floor with my mates 195bhp Rs Turbo S2

the swift is VERY fast, the engine uses all those 156 ponies and puts them down well, i have forged crank and pistons, Full superchips remap to name a few things, im gonna be inporting the turbo conversion for it soon, then its time for some 1/4 mile days out :)
