best way to treat rust
« on: 22 February 2008, 09:32 »
well i have some surface rust on one of my rear arches, not that much, just a 20p size scab but it looks sh!t and the body shops round here want a mint so me and a mate will have a carck at it. i have sanded it down to metal and have used an anti-rust primer but as the top coat hasnt arrived yet should i rub it all down to metal again and maybe use some KURUST, then the primer? i have read that primer will let water get to the metal so you shouldnt leave it on but as i didnt have the top coat i had to. any tips would be great as i hate the tin worm!!!

yea back to metal, KURUST, primer then find some paint to put on top temporarily. Bit of hammerite maybe?

Patches like that can be a real pain in the arse if you dont get it sorted on the first attempt, make sure you realy sand back the area well and if it were me I would sand a little bit more than needed around the outside of the patch just to be as sure as you can that you got it all.

Don't use hammerite where you're going to put a top coat on. It's awful stuff to sand & try to get a good finish with.

Got to agree with that, I used a good rust treatment and then etch primer followed by flatting back then top coat then laquer.
