Get yourself Koni shocks with Eibach springs or Weitec coilovers, fit an Eibach Anti-roll bar kit, get full wheel alignment done, get a performance cam fitted (Kent cams are good), fit a full stainless steel exhaust system and K&N induction kit, and then get the engine tuned up properly and you're laughing. You'll wonder why you ever doubted MK2 Golfs. To gain more performace you could then fit a 2e bottom end from MK3 Golf and get the existing head port and polished.
To be honest I noticed a huge difference in handling just replacing the old stock suspension for new stock suspension.
I need to get a new job, so many things I'd like to do to my Golf...

Good luck with your GTi anyway.
