Some of you may remember a while back that I was having some cold running problems with the Polo GT.
Basically it would overfuel like crazy for the first minute or so, sometimes so bad that the car would stall.
I changed the coolant temp sensor and tested loads of components and thought I would provide some feedback now that I have fixed it.
I finally diagnosed it by unplugging the MAF. It noticeably stopped the overfuelling immediately which lead me to believe that I had narrowed down the problem. Car ran a bit rough but I guess that is because the ECU will have reverted to some sort of defualt map/limp mode.
Yesterday I took the MAF apart. That black plastic cap is glued on with sealant and can be carefully pried off. I cleaned the carbon track, the contacts and the sensor. It now runs like a dream.
Its quite interesting running the car with that cap off. You can see exactly what the flow sensor is doing and can make minor adjustments. Making those minor adjustments probably isn't to be recommended, however, we don't rely on the car and I was curious. I ended up returning it, more or less, to its original setting.
