Long time owner first time poster
« on: 20 February 2008, 21:51 »
Hi There,

As this is my first post, a little about me and the car

I own a black 3 door GTI manual which I bought new in June 05 but have only been regularly driving since Sep 07, Its covered nearly 35K (The rear tires are original). I am self employed and do mostly long journeys (85 mile round trip to work) on A roads and have achieved 40 MPG on a tank, around 440 miles.

I always use 98 RON fuel as I find it frees up the top of the rev range.

The only fault in 2 and half years has been a over sensitive seatbelt warning sensor.

The only criticism I have of the car is a poor sounding standard CD player and the brakes, which I find seem strong at first but don't inspire confidence when you push hard through the twisties.

I have recently thought about replacing the standard 17" alloys with these

and would welcome any advice

I may also replace the radio with an OEM NAV unit as I think the standard unit with the ugly LCD display looks a bit cheap (I turn it off at night just so it looks like you have sat nav!)

again any advice welcome,

Thanks

Welcome to the forum and the MKV section

Just make sure you get decent tyres with the alloys

Have you looked at the new OEM RNS 510 satnav unit?

Hi and welcome.

Nice car and in the BEST colour of course

I have standard sound system with iPod and it does the job for me but many other owners like to go the aftermarket route.

OEM Sat Nav looks good, especially the new RNS510 touchscreen system but the DVD MFD2 system also does the job - only real drawbacks IMO is the lack of full postcode search and a somewhat old-tech 2d mapping display by todays standards.

Monza II's are the dogs and the aftermarket one's you are looking at are competitively priced. Choose your tyres carefully - there are different opinions as to good/bad.

Lot of good threads here so do some searching and you will get a flavour of what's been done by other members. Me, I'm into standard spec all the way - too old to mod

See Hurdy just beat me to it - like minds etc

Hi and Welcome

I bought those alloys that you listed from the same retailer about 3 months ago. I cant fault them. You cant really tell they are rep.
I paired them up with a set of Goodyear Eagle F1's (not the new ones) and all is good. Tyres are great and are quiet. Heres some pics of the Reps:

I replaced my standard headunit with the OEM SATNAV (CD Version) and i have to say it looks much better! Give sit great presence at night because it has a very large LCD. I bought mine from eBay for £389 and installed it myself (plenty of DIY guides on net)
This is the one i bought from this very reliable seller:

Thanks for the welcome,

I must admit my motives for changing the radio to NAV are looks rather than function, and of course it won't hurt the resale value

As for the wheels I may just get the alloys and choose the tires later.
