Complete Re-spray cost
« on: 20 February 2008, 13:02 »

Ive been finding more and more bubbling and rust patches on my golf since i got it last november. The guy i brought it from said the car had a new "flash red" re-spray around April 2007 but i think it was a complete bodged job just to try and tidy the car up a little. The paint on the roof by the sills is chipping slightly, its chipped on the inside of the door revealing a metallic blue colour, there is a bad rust patch over one of the wheel arches and a few other bubbly patches here and there. From a distance, my car looks mint until you get up real close

My dad has told me to save up and get a complete new respray, getting rid of all the rust aswell. I recently lost my job so Im on a budget until i get more money coming in. Obviously it depends on the garage but im just after rough quotes of a full respray on a mk3 golf. I'd probably go for a black re-spray too. The rust that's on the car is definitely not major, it's just surface rust, apart from the bit around the wheel arch which is now showing bare metal underneath.

Just wanted some advice from someone who's already had their car resprayed.

Wow, 2-3k? Didnt think it would be that much. Was expecting around the 1-1.5k mark

Im going to drive to the local bodyshop garage either later on today or tomorrow to see what they're prices are like. I did ring up another garage yesterday to ask how much their hourly rate is to get rid of the rust and he said £28 per hour. Is that a good price? He didnt say (and i didnt ask) whether that included materials etc.

it won't include materials Gabber... paint costs etc will be quite a lot of your cost

also you get what you pay for with a paint job/colour change  - you pay 1k and next year you'll be in the same situation again

my local bodyshop said it would cost between 3-4k for a full respray... but I know that they do a perfect job with OEM materials

whatever you do... only use a bodyshop that you have seen examples of their work and that aren't afraid to show you examples... good ones should be happy to show off what they have done

i tried to save some money once for respraying a wing mirror and used a bodyshop i didn't know... they did a terrible job and I had to go back 9 times to get it finished properly.

i too have asked about a full respray, was going to change colour but figured it'll be cheaper to keep same mystic blue so the door shuts etc wouldnt need doing, the guy reckons it'll be off thr road 3 to 4 weeks too  reckon i'll just treat rust and patch up for now

luckily i know a chap, he quoted me 800 notes to flash the car over, including paint. but that didnt include sorting out rust. but tbh, my mk2 dont have any rust. it depends on what you want tbh, would it not be cheaper to buy another mk3 in the colour you want, then transferr all the bits off your car and sell the red one? keep your eye out for a decent example...

I think I'm going to have to just get rid of the rust and touch up a little on the body work. All my friends are telling me to get a black respray if i get one, but it'll take me a looong time to save up a few thousand and I do want to get it sorted within the next few months.

Im just gonna ask the garage to get rid of the rust and bubbling on the wheel arch, the bits around where the front bumper fits on, and the bubbling around the back passenger window. The paint is also peeling and chipping slightly on the roof by the edge and a little on the back bumper, this is what makes me think the spray job it had before was a cheap one which wasn't properly done.

if its only bubbling, then i'd rub it down yourself, treat it with krust or something, and then primer it, rub it down, and get your paint patched and a rattle can made up, and flash it over yourself... i wouldnt pay paint shop prices for stuff like that... but if its gonna need welding, then why not just buy a new front wing, get the paint shop to match up your colour, spray it for you, then fit it yourself, litrally take all of 10 mins to fit one...

wouldnt worry about the bumpers, they are plastic so wont rot, just concentrate on the simple stuff first...
