Boot "Vents"?

Do the rear vents in the boot serve any purpose?

They are located under the plastic side sections which the rear parcel shelf sits on.

Piccie below shows driver's side with the light. Passenger side vent is similar but has no light.



If I cover the passenger side one up with the arch install will it have any negative effect on air circulation?

So you can shut the boot, otherwise the air in there would create a cushion that would make it harder to shut the boot.

It also helps with flow of air from dash vents to the outside. Removing stail air as the car moves.
I have both mine covered with boot builds and it has not caused any real noticable problems

That's what I was hoping to here. 

I've just finished the fibre-glass mould for the boot build and noticed that it was covering the vent on the passenger side. I was thinking about cutting down the mould at the top so that the vent would still work, but I think having one uncovered will be enough to remove the air.

I was recently given a copy of ELSA by a mechanic i know in my local VW garage 
If you listen carefully you can hear this/these pop open when you close the door, assuming all the windows are closed, not sure if there's one on the other side or not, it doesn't say.



You can see here where it vents into the boot, doesnt look like it's connected in anyway to the grill next to the light, I assumed this vent was to allow air to travel up the C-pillar into the space between the head lining and the roof skin to prevent moisture build up?
