« on: 02 April 2004, 16:19 »
Hi i have a MK3 Golf GTI 8-valve with a cutting out issue, the car`s revs drop to 1000rpm whenever im dropping down a gear or stopping at traffic lights. does anybody know the cure for this?

I`ve heard its something to do with the relay? is this true?.. if so which relay?

My car is a P reg 3 door Golf GTI 8 valve which if i do say so myself is in mint condition

your idle should be about 800 rpm........

if its stalling it could be the isv and if this is ok it can also be a sender wiring problem...... snapped wire etc.... the isv should buzz if it does give it a clean!

if that doesnt sort it then its likely its a wiring fault...

if you cant fix it get the fault codes read !

Numerous possible answers to this but the cure on mine was to clean out the throttle bodies. did this 2 months ago and been fine since. I actually bought a tin of ecotek powerboost and it has worked a treat. www.ecotekplc.co.uk ;D

Problem solved! My mechanic cleaned out the throttle body with carb cleaner as the MK3 Golfs havent got an automatic dirt collecter like other cars.. its quite easy to do yourself if you have the tools! -

My Golf no longer cuts out! Horraaaaaaay!

You dont need a new gasket ...

here is my guide to solviong the cutting out issue:

The throttle body is at the back of the engine, if you locate the air box (where the air filter lives) follow the air ducting towards the back of the engine, where it ends, is a metal body, the throttle cable goes into it, you take off the air hose, then disconnect the battery, undo the multi plug that plugs into the throttle body, then undo four bolts connecting the throttle body to the manifold, and lastly disconnect the oil breather that comes from the front of the engine at the sump, when all that is done, you can clean the inside of the throttle body, and the butterfly flap, you will notice that it is dirty and black from carbon......

Let me know if this helps
