mk3 VR6 cam chains replacement - garage quotes??

i've done 2 of em pretty straight forward ,the ones i did though the engines where already out .there normally dont need changing -but vr's are common for headgaskets around the 100k so changing the chains at this time saves a few bob .

Is it easy with the engine in place? any other tips?

Whats the tentioner and chain cost roughly?

just quicket to take it out really or you will be pissing about in the engine bay.trying to work at an angle ,i got the parts from ecp -but i also got bearings for crank and stuff came to about 230 for everything.you will be looking at roughly 160 quid for tensioners and quides and the 2 chains.

The whole kit from VW comes in just short of £200 and unless youre a pretty competant mechanic and have access to ramps etc then i'd pay for it to be done.
I like playing about with the basic mechanics but didnt fancy tackling mine - look to pay anywhere from £200-£500 labour depending on where you go. Also a good idea to check the clutch whilst the box is out...

so its a gearbox off job by what im reading.

Just had the covers off and the guide/tentioner is worn soo bad and broken in 4 suprised it ran

gearbox is being a right pain to get off.

remove the driveshaft cups gives you little moor room to get it out .circlip or 6mm allen key
