re-fitting gearbox mk3 gti, urgent please
« on: 15 February 2008, 20:11 »
i just bought myself a K reg mk3 gti. got it mega cheap as gearbox wasnt in the car.

been through all the bits in the box and it all appears to be there.

i need a bit of advise before the morning as im gonna fit it tomorrow, how do you do the flywheel up onto the cover plate ?

do i put the flywheel and clutch in the box and then put the box on the engine and do it through the starter motor hole ?

or, put the clutch and flywheel on first and then slide the box through and onto the engine ?

thanks, hope someone can help me asap !

Is the flywheel off the engine then? If not then its just the clutch and cover plate your going on about, fix the clutch and plate to the flywheel first, it needs centralising use a deep socket or an alignment tool, do the plate bolts up to specified torques, then slip the box into the clutch and flywheel, its a squeeze on the n/s due to the inner wing area, ideal way is have the car on stands and let the engine sit at angle to aid getting the box in, once on theres loads of room to level it up, look at all the mounts while your at it too, if they cracking at all you may as well put some new  on save the ball ache later, pretty simple job really if you've done something like this before, better to have two pairs of hands though, like most jobs, good luck

i believe this is a push type clutch ? the pressure plate bolts to the engine, and then it looks like the clutch plate and flywheel have to go inside the gearbox !

doesn't look like a conventional set up where you would use a aligning tool ? this is why im confused.

you fit the pressure plate to the engine and the fly wheel over it,  the friction plate is alighned using a micometer to make sure its even central!  Or.. a screwdriver and an eye for detail!

The box just pushes on over the whole clutch assembly,  simple as that (but its not that easy because its bloody awkward getting it on!) takes a bit of fiddling.

I have just done the same, these pics might help
