Big Bumpers
« on: 15 February 2008, 14:07 »
Hi everyone, just got my first Mk2 Golf, after transferring from an aircooled vdub, so sorry for my lack of any knowledge .  The golf came with big bumbers and before I go have a look and most probably break something, do I have to jack the car to change them or is there anything else that I need to do??

Sorry again for asking about such basic things, but i'm new...

Cheers

Hi. Have a look at this.

In short, you don't have to jack the car, but it gives you more room to get the four big 17mm bolts out. You shouldn't drive the car when the bolts are out as they are load bearing. Some people support the engine while there out too, but i didn't bother!

That's quite a jump, despite the same badge. You'll have to tell us how you get on with the Golf - and why you swapped.

I swapped because in a few months im gonna have commute to Bristol daily and i couldnt put the bug through that... and i still wanted a car with soul so i was looking at either a golf or a caddy...

i think i made the right choice, will get another bug one day!

oh yeah, and even though it looked mega cool, it was pretty crap for transporting my surfboard!

Keep the engine supported, or at least the cross member as the weight of the engine will load up the other two mounts in a twisting action.

no need to support the engine, just make sure you only remove the 2 large 17mm bolts either side, leave the smaller bolts alone.  Make sure the smaller bolts are there before you start tho, or the front crossmember will fall off which would be bad
