wrecked engine?
« on: 01 April 2004, 16:30 »
Yesterday when I was sitting in traffic the oil light and buzzer came on for about 10-15 seconds, then went off and the car was fine, I thought it could be the oil pump and strainer, but when I went to start the car this morning, it fired up, the revs drop to about 400, and then it cuts out. I tried again and it just cuts out straight away. It didn't sound too good either. By the way the car is an 88 8 valve, with 140k.
Can anyone help?, I think the engine may have given up.

is there oil in it! most people dont check there oil and when it goes bang they wonder why!

i cant see the knacked engine being related to with it not starting! unless its siezed but then it wont turn over!

if the oil pump failing the top end will start to sound bad..... and then it goes through the whole engine!

butthe bottom end shouldnt fail at once! not if there oil there!

Yeah mate the oil level is on max
I managed to start the car, it must have been the wet weather, but it does seem to be mis-firing, you can hear a popping from the exhaust when it is cold.
When the car didn't start I just assumed it was related to the fact the oil light came on, it could just be the sender unit

An engine will start fine if the oil light comes on unless as said above its seized. It might be noisy mind as it will be receiving low pressure.

As you were sitting in traffic in heat when it came on I would change the oil and filter as it sounds like the oil you have in at present is thinning out and causing a drop in pressure.

Do that and see if the problem happens again, If so it might be a worn oil pump.

I changed the oil and filter a few weeks ago, using Castrol 10w40

most back street car part shops sell it!

if you live in or near stoke on trent the steering wheel sells it....

its on watlands view at the top of porthill bank off the A500  before you get to talke roundabout!
also at the top of porthill there is cargo they have valvoline logos up so i guess they sell it!

other than theses i live in stoke so i havent got a clue where else sells it but i would think most back street places do!
