snow chains??
« on: 14 February 2008, 14:13 »
Hi, anyone got any advice on this? Looking to take my pride and joy into the Alps for a boarding holiday. It's a standard car so I shouldn't have any issues with clearance regarding the chains, just wondered if any one had bought a set? What size should I buy?? Has anyone got experience of driving at altitude in freezing conditions with snow chains??

Gonna top up my antifreeze and pack a nice warm rug (for my knees).

I've driven with snow chains before on boarding holidays. They really are f*ckers to fit with cold hands! That was in a people-carrier, but it does make a hell of a difference in thick snow and inclined roads. It all depends on the snow conditions really, and if the roads aren't that hairy they're not worth it in mild conditions, just drive sensibly.

If you're driving to the Alps, they will sell them in petrol stations when you get close if I remember rightly, if you have standard tyres you shouldn't have any trouble getting a set. If you don't know already, here's a couple of tips for driving in snow:

Always brake before a corner, never during it. The car will stop turning if you do and off the road you go.
Sometimes you press on the brakes and nothing happens! This has happened to me before, something to do with snow getting in the tyre treads and reducing friction I think. If this happens pump your foot up and down on the pedal until they bite.

Happy boarding

Thanks for the advice Steve.

Do the petrol stations sell the chains for massively inflated prices?? The skin-flint/OCD sufferer in me is checking out ebay offerings, though I'm not sure which size to buy??

I really can't remember, it was about 8 years ago and we never checked out prices before we got there.

As for sizes, if you've got standard wheels just get some for your size. You have rubber straps that go round the inside tyre wall to create the tension to keep them on, so there's some room for adjustment, as long as you don't have wide alloys or something should be fine.

Which resort you going to?
