basically i know of a diesel golf that needs a new gearbox as its got a diff that whines alot, so i was thinking of giving my box to my mate as im getting rid of it anyway, will it fit??? are the ratios all that different? the box i have will be out of a 1.8 driver

according to my cat the diesel uses the hydraulic gti 16v type box??....and the 1.8 is the 020 cable box (like the 2.0 8v)
have a look at the diesel and see if it has a green cover on the side of the box (nearest passenger wheel)

If the diff has gone on a MK3 its probably an 020 Box
I know the MK2 diesel fits the MK3 8V but not sure about the MK3 diesel!  I was under the impression it would fit!  but mabey not
