Just to agree with what overseer said earlier, just because you get a newer car doesn't mean that it's not going to go wrong. How many people have nightmares with brand spanking new cars ! Even if you get a late mk3 it's still going to be about 6(ish) years old. At your age it probably would make more sense to get a 1.6 and do it up due to insurance etc, but you might not be happy and still strive for the GTi.

I've had my cab for a year now and I'm a lot older than you, I wish I had got one years earlier, so much wasted time driving bangers because I was waiting until "I was older" to get the car that I really wanted. Life's too short, get the car you want and forget about the people who will take the mick, some people will just never understand.

thanks mate the insurnace bit is no probs got got a quote from tesco's 4 a mk2 golf gti 16v and it turns out providing i hav a approved alarm fitted its cheaper 2 insure than my mk5 escort 1.4cvh!!

forget about the people who will take the mick, some people will just never understand.

Just get a solid mk1 or mk2.  Might cost a bit to repair, but will be fun, and cheap to buy.

well if you're getting a good quote for a mk2 valver its all good!

not that i'm biased or anything, but budget allowing.. you could consider a mk3 one too.. they nice

listen mate the mk2 aint getting any younger and with time there wont be any about at all so if its been your dream to own a mk2 gti then get one even if you own for 6 months at least then you have full filled an ambition or childhood ambition.....

if its any concillation i owned a mk3 gti on a m plate it was an 8v..... and yeah it was ok but i sold it and bought a mk2 16v with 123k on the clock and it runs beautifully and has given me hassle free motoring for 50 miles everyday!!!!!!! for the past 2 months of ownership

the reason i did this was becasue i too wanted a mk2 from the start but got the mk3 wasted loads of money on buying it outright when i should of just bought the mk2 from the start.... there faster they look nicer and parts are very cheap for it!!!!!

ive got a plan, gonna hire a garage off the council, get a mk2 gti, wivout the folks knowing, work on it then clean it and polish it till u can eat off it then drive it home and say told ya! that way they wont be able 2 do sod all! will they?!

lol... i'll admit my dad towed mine home when i got stuck, he likes my car though.

but i used my breakdown cover to get it from home to the garage.

well all my mates drive, so ive got no problems if i need a tow home!
right then looks like im gonna get a mk2!! btw wot sort of price range would i b looking at? if all goes 2 plan i shd b driving 1 by the summer! bring it on

work out what kind of spec you want and watch autotrader to see what the going rate for what you want is.

i did that for 2 months before i bought my car.
