Hi been on the forum for a while, in which time i have gained some valuable information...

I am considering ordering a 30 ed, after thinking about most of the other hot hatches, i feel that the 30 ed ticks all right boxes, and in Candy white i think it looks the doggies!

Vxr - Looks ok but it struggling to cope with its power put me off.
St - Really like it in white, but the MPG have put me off.
Typer R - Silver with the Rage Alloys would be for me but not much difference in power at all from the last Type R.

I am thinking of going down to my local stealer tommorow.  When i rang them i asked if they had any 30 ed that i could take for a test drive, they said they had none and didnt even have any gti's for me to test. He said i could test drive a gt to get a feel!!! I am in Glasgow and when I rang another stealer in Glasgow they also had no gti's in for a test drive either!

Has anyone ordered a 30 ed without a test drive of one?

I havent driven in a with DSG so was wanting to try and see how it was compared to a manual!!

One last question for people who had just ordered or recieved there 30ed's are there any discounts to be had on these cars now? What would i push to get from the stealer?

Thanks for any help

Hi ice_cube99,

Went out in a GTI recently, back-to-back with a R32. Loved the GTI, quite liked the R32. Put down an order for a Candy White, ED30, 3-door... assuming it won’t be that different than a GTI (hopefully a bit more pokey).

Car should be here in a couple of weeks and I can’t wait.

Yes there are discounts available, you just have to haggle hard, be a serious buyer and have some fun with them. If they can’t do the deal then move on to another dealer who will. My discounts ranged from 3%-6%, I’ll let you guess which one I chose.

Have fun... Hotrod

Hi there

We have the standard GTi and I can honestly say that the Ed30 is incredible even though I have never been in one. Theres many reasons for this:

1. Golf GTI won car of the year in 2005
2. Jeremy Clarkson said it was one of the most pleasurable and awesome car he has ever driven.
3. The sales... Look how the Edition 30 sales are going. Theres talk and I think its been done but the Ed30 is still in production.
4. Quality. The Mk5 is the most expensive Golf yet. Due to high quality etc etc

So I can honestly say. We waited 6 months to get our GTi and never test drove a single GTi nor even a standard golf. Take the Ed30 at motorpoint for a spin or just order one and when it arrives get the fright of your life

DSG

IS basically one of the most advanced automatic geraboxes around. The reason for this is because it both a manual shift gerabox (through paddles on the steering wheel much like a forumala 1 car) and can also be driven in a normal automatic mode where no changing of gears is needed.

The Dsg box also knocks of almost a second of 0-60 lap times and does not come standard on the GTi.

Not sure if I missed something?

whats DSG?

....That's a very long story!

It's a wet dual clutch gearbox system in which the cogs are paired in evens and odds so that the next gear up or down is instantly available. It's NOT an 'automatic' gearbox but does have automatic gear shifting options. It shifts gear faultlessly everytime and is faster than any human shift.

D mode = Changes gear automatically.

S mode = Kisses the red zone revs in each gear before changing gear.

M mode = Manual shifts controlled either via steering wheel paddles or nudging the floor stick tiptronically.

You can overide, mix and match the modes to suit while driving.

Because of so many possible combinations it takes a little while to become fluid and natural. But it's the best of all worlds - Scream on the twisties with the paddleshifts and pop her into D for stress-free traffic jam crawls or urban.

Direct Shift Gearbox is a dual-clutch automated manual gearbox, which shifts gears faster than Michael Schumacher could ever hope to even in an automatic Ferrari. With two wet plate clutches and a two-part transmission shaft operating different gears, the DSG never takes a rest. For example, when you select “D” for drive, first gear is selected by one clutch, and second gear is pre-selected by the other clutch. This produces an almost seamless gear change with little or no loss of power between shifts. The DSG is currently on board the Bugatti Veyron

Although you can also change gears manually on the GTI/ED30/R32 using a set of steering wheel mounted paddles, there’s no point really. Just select “S” for Sport and the DSG will run to almost redline in every gear with a little bonus on the way down. When braking hard on the approach to a corner, the car will automatically down shift with a delightful double clutch song, enabling you to power out of the corner in the perfect gear ratio.

It is a great gearbox and is now being copied by the likes of Nissan in their GTR, the new Evo 10 and Porsche, so you can tell it is good when others imitate

....I strongly disagree with you saying "there is no point really" in using the paddles.

One of the things I learnt on my performance driving course (on public roads in my car with top grade blue light instructor) was to select every gear to maintain the ability to instantly either slow or accelerate in the optimum gear.

For approx the first 20,000 miles (44k miles total) in my GTI I only used D and used S for fun twisties and for an overtake. It's behaviour is great and is exactly as you say but does not give you as fine control as using the paddles manually. There are circumstances where she'll change gear when you don't necessarily want her to and also take you into revs you don't necessarily want/need.

Having said that, I absolutely love DSG and wouldn't want another car without it or its equivalent (Mitsu Evo X?).
