Considering.....
« on: 11 February 2008, 11:07 »
Hi been on the forum for a while, in which time i have gained some valuable information...

I am considering ordering a 30 ed, after thinking about most of the other hot hatches, i feel that the 30 ed ticks all right boxes, and in Candy white i think it looks the doggies!

Vxr - Looks ok but it struggling to cope with its power put me off.
St - Really like it in white, but the MPG have put me off.
Typer R - Silver with the Rage Alloys would be for me but not much difference in power at all from the last Type R.

I am thinking of going down to my local stealer tommorow.  When i rang them i asked if they had any 30 ed that i could take for a test drive, they said they had none and didnt even have any gti's for me to test. He said i could test drive a gt to get a feel!!! I am in Glasgow and when I rang another stealer in Glasgow they also had no gti's in for a test drive either!

Has anyone ordered a 30 ed without a test drive of one?

I havent driven in a with DSG so was wanting to try and see how it was compared to a manual!!

One last question for people who had just ordered or recieved there 30ed's are there any discounts to be had on these cars now? What would i push to get from the stealer?

Thanks for any help

hey, welcome to the forum, candy white ed30 is by far better than any of the other cars you mentioned!! i drove my gti 40 yrds and decided i wanted her!! larger dealers will have a few gti's in maybe :undecided:. although i went to  blackpool VW and they had 4 R32's and not a single gti anywhere

Hi icecube99 - we ordered our candy white edition 30 DSG without either driving one or even seeing a candy white golf ever.

Why?

-basically the GTI was the only car we liked the look of in the flesh, and the pics on the web of white looked fab.
-the Edition30 spec was far better than our old car, so there was no chance it was going to be disappointing
-Why gamble with DSG? Well the three things I hated about autos were:
a) The extra fuel
b) The lack of control when you wanted it (on most auto boxes)
c) Slow changes (some boxes - my dad's BMW auto box was absolutely dreadful - go for the overtake and it would often take two seconds before the power came on)

All the reviews of the DSG said all these were addressed. (And it turned out to be true).

I wouldn't go for DSG if the car was intended to be used as a track car, but then I wouldn't buy a golf for that sort of thing, I'd buy an old elise or something else a bit more minimal.

In the end, when we actually drove the car, it was even better than we'd imagined, the only problem being that you have to be aware of when to take your foot off the accelerator when you join a motorway, because you hit 100 without realising... With the old manual car, you sort of understood how fast you were going from the engine note in a certain gear. With the DSG thingy and the reasonably refined ride, it's hard to tell what gear it's in (or speed you're doing!) without looking at the dash.

I sat in a white E30 at a dealers. And then I ordered it. No test drive.
E30 is fabulous, but I wish it had RWD or 4x4.  :embarassed:

....Easily sorted!! Get a Milltek exhaust - They are not very loud and NOT boy-racer sounding but are loud enough to hear your engine. DSG can be driven as a 'manual' with either tiptronic or, as I much prefer, the paddles. Use D-mode for towns and traffic jam crawling. You can instantly overide D with a paddleshift anyway.

Thanks for the quick replys!

Think i dont have to test drive one then by the looks of things, and DSG is better than the traditional manual then? Is it easy to get used to?

Are there deals out there now?

stevieC - I have seen them, but they are all silver that they have, I really want to try and get it in Candy White
