gearbox oil
« on: 31 March 2004, 17:22 »
Hello.

I've been to a number  of mechanics that deal in Golfs. They assure me the oil in the gearbox does not need changing.

Surely this is not the case. I've run the car  for  years and sure it needs changing. Also when the car heats  up, sometimes the gears stick going from 1st to 2nd after longish drives. Is this normal or synchro going?

Thanks

Greenhornet.

Hi, Greenhornet. Deff change the g/box oil. Use a good quality synthetic oil and let us know how you get on with the 1st to 2nd gear selection.
Steve.

They say its filled for life, but I find it better to change it over to something like syntrax which makes the change so much better.

thanks,

James.

theres a drain plug and there a fill plug.....

the fill plug is on the end of the gearbox if you left hand lock the steering wheel and at the front passanger side look at the back of the whel arch and you will see an allen key plug this is the fill plug when you fill it keep filling it until the stuff starts to trickle back out make sure it is full as if you pour it in too quick it cant go in fast enough and you get the ''its full''
effect! so put a container under when filling!
it should hold about 1.5ml 1 and half litre! - 2 litres.....

the drain plug is the same allen key under the gearbox
its under the diffrential! look where the drive shafts join the gearbox the plug is under the diff!

its a 17mm allen key...... vw have now changed this
allen key plug, you cant buy them anymore you can buy the new plug but you need a special vw tool which looks like a splind bit but with a round hole in the middle, to stop you from using a normal splind key they have put a round bit in the centre of the new plugs ....... so unless you have the vw you cant use the new plugs so dont round them off! unless your near a scrapyard!

i'm working on making my own vw tool..... i have onw of theses new plugs and i'm going to but a splind bit and drill a hole in the centre! i'm going to find out when size it is !!!!!

hope this is helpful... :D ;D

Also dont forget that in some applications the gearbox is at a slight incline so you may have to jack the car up on one side to get the full amount of fluid into the box.

When I refilled my gearbox on my 16V I jacked it up and just put 2 litres in it as this is the capacity of the 2Y box.

Thanks Guys, I had a recon box about 2-3 years ago.

Do you think it needs changing yet or should it be OK for now?

Thanks again.
