skimming cylinder head

doing the head gasket on my 8v gti. any 1 done this with out geting the head skimmed. or if got it skimmed what was the cost

Cost me £20 on my old MK2  :grin:

Mate of a mate, & he let me have a 4 lamp GTi grill for free too!

Defo worth getting it done though, not a lot of point replacing the gasket if you don't!

Ask around, my find a yokel who'll do it cheap!

What???

It's not a performance mod dude! White smoke pouring out the exhaust or a 'milky' oil cap & chances are you're head gasket has gone letting water mix with the oil circulating the engine!

Not a good thing but if noticed in time can be fixed at minimal cost by skimming the head & a new set of gaskets! :wink:

when you skim the head it raises the compression, but it wont be skimmed enough to make much difference.

Hardly as you're suppose to have the valves & heads machined to keep everything tickity boo!

When you have a head 'skimmed' it's only one step above a polish really, there will be no power gains I'm afraid.

i no it wont give me extra power and i dont want extra power. what im saying is if the head was skimmed enough it would change the compression ratio, but to do this youd had to mill 1-2mm of the head. therfore the extra compression would give you small gains. but this dosnt intrest me. im just getting my head skimmed enough to remove any distortion that could of been caused when the head was removed.

if i was after extra power id remove the valves and open up the ports on the inlet and exhaust and remove the cast marks then id polish them, i match the 2 manifolds as well. oooh and fit a high lift cam
