Is it too obvious to suggest getting a new fuel relay??

Probably not to be honest, it just threw me a little how the relay does click and the pump does prime, but only after you try to start the engine rather than before!

The pump priming after and not before is throwing me a bit on my project. It will only run with the key held in position 3, as soon as its released the motor cuts out. although a new ignition switch has been suggested.

I don't think a semi will give the same results

hello guys i dont know if any of what im about to say u will understand
i have just got my self an 86 golf gti  this has the k jet engine i got the car as a none runner and from the sound of what alot of you are saying is what i have been doing over the last few nights
i tested both pumps for power but i could'nt under stand why there was'nt anything there till i turned the key but by the by i the test the in tank pump i have a thing called a power probe which use battery power to work any way that tested fine so then i tested the main pump but there did'nt seem to be any thing there so i went out today and got another pump try and tested befor i fitted but after fitting i cracked the feed pipe at the front of the car to make sure the fuel was getting there but it was'nt in the end i had to prime the main pump with the in tank one i did this with the power probe on the main pumps plug as they both use the same feed after doing this there was fuel at the front of the car as for not priming all the time frrom what i can gather it will only prime when the ignition is on if the pressure in the fuel line is low

hope this helps

dont fit a digifant pump to a k-jet car,m it cant supply enough fuel, plus needs some horrible bodges to the fuel lines to make it fit.

My K-Jet doesn't prime before starting either, its done that for the past 18 months. It will only need to prime if the fuel pressure is low. On a failed start, you hear the pump prime.

In terms of the pump, just because its drawing a +12v and whirring doesn't mean its working! My old fuel pump used to make all the right noises, but it didn't actually do anything. Best way to find out is to remove the fuel line off the fuel dist block on top of the air filter and see if theres any pressure, or remove the pump housing altogether and test the lift pump on its own, and check the pressure pump on its own.

the fuel pump should always prime regardless, theres nothing anywhere that 'knows' what the fuel pressure is ;)

I was just throwing in my 2p - mine has never primed on the turn of the ign, maybe my accumulator knows the fuel pressure and mysteriously informs the fuel pump it can have a day off.
