The 1st gear problem...
« on: 31 March 2004, 14:10 »
Sum people have complained that at like 10mph u cant clutch in and change into 1st gear without crunching in a mk3...

Well... dunno if u know this, but if u give the car a few revs and then change into 1st, it'll go in first time with no crunching.

If you already know then fine ... but if u didnt know, then try this... see if it helps.

Cheers

i notice it more going into reverse..

will give it a go though next time though.. doesnt happen much right now.

think i've seen something about topping up, or changing transmission fluid being a good fix for this.

The reverse thing ... u can usually tell if its in gear or not as u start to let the clutch out ... theres no resistance ... but if u let it out quickly then u aint gonna realise theres no resistance and its gonna go "CRUNCH" or "SQUEAL"

nah its not like that.. the reverse thing goes like this.

drive fowards, stop, put the clutch 100% fully down on the floor, put the car in reverse and it crunches, the clutch is fully down.

Thats cos there is no Synchromesh on reverse.

I dont think any VW has Sync on reverse ... not even the new mk5 .. But Mondeo's have it  ::)

I've read somewhere that the reverse problem is due to miniscule errors in the balancing of the flywheel.

Apparently if you have it skimmed it will fix the problem.

An alternative is to put the car into 2nd before engaging reverse. This does something which I don't understand, but basically stops the crunching sound when selecting reverse.

I've been doing this for two months now and it has eliminated the problem with respect to reverse.

could explain why its more intermittent (and doesnt happen to me much) i guess i stop in 2nd most of the time..

i'll try the opposite see if it makes it happen more, lol.
