Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

There is a selector rod in the gear linkage that's just for 5th gear, that's the first thing I'd look at as its easy to get to and only costs about a quid to replace. A white plastic thing about 2 or 3 inches long.

Look at rubjonny's gear linkage guide in the maintenance section for more info.

euro caqr parts or gsf of Egay. thats where i would start, i got a full kit, including all bushes link rods and new ball housing off ebay, wasnt expensive either, took an afternoon to fit. easy to do, and with a mk3 weighted shift rod (do a search if u dont know what one is) its an extreamly satisfying mod along with the new linkage kit.

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!

I had a similar issue, but I couldn't get 2nd! The gearbox mount was shafted :)
check the 2 link rods with the plastic ends, loosing 5th is a common symptom of a damaged short linkage
