My next step there would be to try a new rotor arm and a new dizzy cap. Should be cheap enough from GSF. Also, I know you've checked the gauze, but just to make sure, check your filler neck is not rusty as they have a nasty habit of getting rust in the fuel system and it causes no end of problems.

do the spark plugs while you're there, get tripple probe ones if given a choice but i thin std they are tripples anyway.

Try http://www.vwspares.co.uk, normally cheaper than gsf...

It's a long shot as this is usually hot starting problems, but take the fuel relay out (I think its the big one, top left on the fuse box) and check the connections on it and sandpaper them if necessary. Other than that I don't know what it might be, but have you also checked all the wiring and connections in the engine bay, maybe it could be a dodgy earth or a loose wire somewhere, it has been known before.

i took the dizzy and rotor back off again and noticed that the part you slide the rotor arm onto has a bit of side to side movement is this normal i gather its supposed to spin round but not wiggle side to side??
