« on: 07 February 2008, 21:36 »
Hey all, i wonder if you'd be so kind to give me some advice.

I'm about to buy a new Golf and i was wondering what is the good and bad points of the MK4 4motion? I've had a little search throughout these boards but not managed to find all the info im after, i'd appreciate if you could answer some of my questions :)

Performance compared to the other mk4's (R32 Excluded) That one's a while away yet :(
Economy?
Reliability?
Commen faults?
Handling?

And any other little interesting facts you could throw in would be great.

Thanks in advance, Andy

No such thing as a (UK) GTi 4-Motion.  There are a no. of pro's & cons to both the GTi 1.8 T & V6 4-M.  (Although there are 4 different variants of the 1.8 T - 3 x 150 bhp & 180 bhp ).

If you're a man who likes to keep things standard, then I'd say the V6 edges it.

+ Sound of the engine Vs hairdryer sound of 1.8 T.
+ Performance.
+ Extra grip on wet roads.
+ Bigger brakes (same as AUQ 1.8 T's, though).

- Less nimble handling than 1.8 T's (V6 is a heavier car).
- 1.8 T's can be easily (& relatively cheaply) tuned to be quicker than the V6's (i.e. re-map).
- Turbo's are much more economical - Inc. re-mapped ones.

Both have niggly little things that go wrong - T's: coilpacks, MAF sensors etc. - V6's: Haldex (on 4WD system) & coilp[acks.

the only thing i can add about the V6 is that you get pretty much everything as standard option wise.

which includes nice touched like the rain-tronic wipers, auto dimming mirror, you would expect it to have xenons and leather too.
