Mk2 Cylinder help..
« on: 07 February 2008, 18:29 »
Hey guys...
To cut a long story short, my fan belt went and I did about 5miles with it gone trying to finish off a 280 mile journey. Replaced fan belt, drove around for a few miles and it overheated again leaving mayonnaise in the sump.

After this I thought it was the head gasket.. Just been out, taken my head off ready to change the gasket.. Then the puzzlement begins:
Head gasket looks fine
Cylinder head looks fine
A few inches of water in each cylinder though :/

Also, I noticed before when changing the fan belt that a hose on the right hand side of the head (as looked at from the front of the car) was bubbling a bit, like there was a leak, and that also there was a serious amount of crystalized anti-freeze around my engine bay. Could this be anything to do with it?

Other suggestions I've had are that the head gasket might have expanded while warm and allowed water to gush in, but surely not enough to put a few inches in each cylinder?

And the last I've had is that the top of the oil filter apparently has an oil pipe, and a water pipe, and that the seperation could have corroded... But again, surely this would be a random thing and not necessarily come about through overheating?

Any input would be great...

as you remove the head water from the jackets in the head fall into the bores. If you had just 5mm of water in each bore the engine would hydraulic and bend your con rods!!!!

Get the head crack tested and skimmed, replace the water housing on the head and top hose.get a genuine head gasket and bung it all together!! that will give you your best shot!!

It is VERY unlikely but if you still get oil and water mixing be weary of the oil cooler, presuming you have a gti!

hope that helps!

Helped a mate do his head gasket on a golf mk2 practically the same as mine (mines a 90 gti 8v 3 door, his is an 89 gti 8v 5 door) there was no water... But aye, I'm talking DEEP. I've got at least an inch or 2 in every bore :/

I've tried to find out what the pipe is that was bubbling on the side of my head, and apparently it's a coolant flange... If memory serves me right it looks roughly like this :

Unless any other ideas are suggested, I'ma get a new one over the weekend and fit it all with a new head gasket (already bought).

How am I meant to get all the water out my bores?

Haha, okey doke..

Robbed a pic from someone to show the flange that's leaking... It's the circled one with a white and metal clip around it. Could this be anything to do with it?

these water housings are forever splitting but i doubt that would cause that much water in the cylinders to be honest! seems a bit strange!

its all just fallen in when the head came off as said. overheating can be caused by a few things, if the coolant system cant pressurise it'll boil over, so any leaks should be fixed.  Replace both the plastic flanges on the head with new VW ones, then see how it goes from there.  There is a coolant FAQ I wrote either in the MK2 FAQ or garage faq section, takes you through all the checks you'll want to do on the coolant system before you start driving it again :)
