Does the surround and tray come with this pioneer unit, or did you have to source them separately? Looks very smart by the way

....Sourced separately but very easily. I always use the same car audio specialist.

I have a Kenwood 7200. Good system and well specced. See below.

I really like the look of your kenwood Hurdy, where did you get the plastic surround? Easy enough to install? How can you connect an Ipod? I have the VW prep, but I assume it needs its own lead? (sorry for all the questions!)

Ah I've just noticed you can buy a separate lead for thirty quid. I suppose you just run this into the glovebox.

I have the Kenwood DDX-7029 which is the same as Hurdy's but without the Satnav, the i-pod lead is just run from the Glove box which renders the v/w prep useless which it was anyway. It is a great system, had the Bluetooth set up as well which works great.

Cheers for that J.M - I was just looking at that system actually, much better for me as I don't ever use SAT NAV (good old fashioned map book all the way!), best price I could find is £429.99 which ain't bad. Did you install it yourself? If so is it easy enough to do? And where do you get the plastic surround? Cheers

No did not install in myself, (that would have been a laugh) had it done by my local car audio dealer, they supplied the surround and cables. Did not want the one with Sat Nav as i have a Tom Tom which i am happy with.

Ah I've just noticed you can buy a separate lead for thirty quid. I suppose you just run this into the glovebox.

Plastic surround was bought from Source sounds near where I live. I had Source sounds install the speakers and the Headunit, but since then I've had it back out again. The head unit only took them an hour to fit and that was with some extra fiddling to see if they could get the Video IPOD lead to my centre console. In the end it was put through into the glovebox without any problems. The HU simply fits via a harness adapter which as you say is a plug and play affair. The IPOD connects through the USB2.0 port in the rear of the unit and if you have a video IPOD you need the video IPOD cable. I also have bluetooth and a reverse camera fitted to it too. The reverse camera comes on automatically when I select reverse

I must stress that once you have an aftermarket unit fitted you will get extra distortion coming through the speakers at the higher volumes. This is because VW head units have a function called DSP (digital sound processing) which controls the frequencies the speakers can output at certain volumes. With the aftermarket unit you do not have the DSP any longer and get the full volume through all the frequency range. The reason VW use DSP is because their speakers are very poor quality (yes even with the VW soundpack) and built down to a cost. I was told by the sound specialist that even low end aftermarket speakers are better quality than the VW soundpack ones. He showed me the VW speaker against a cheap aftermarket one and the quality of build is markedly different. The sound output of the standard VW speakers is poor and they simply cannot handle the full output from aftermarket headunits and even have been known to fail. Whatever you do, don't think of putting extra power through them via an amp

Russ - RNS 510 off ebay are around £1000.

trusted seller in Germany is gps-jocker.  Dont be fooled by the name, many people from here and vwnavi.com have brought from him.

make sure you buy the one for the Golf V and not the Touareg.

hmm its all a bit messy, pick the new kenwoods and if you have black & white screen ipod then its not compat.
as for stealing them they look like they are bolted to the car so you would need to use crowbar to get them out which would damage the unit anyway.
one things for sure the rcd300 and ipod connection are guff.

I fitted my own stereo through a couple of guides on here and also on MKIVs.
Its just a single DIN Alpine iDA-X001 which is an iPod only stereo - but the principle was the same.
The surround is available directly from any VW stealer and will cost you about £20.  You can get cheaper ones from aftermarket companies, but I found the £10 one I bought didnt have the same plastic texture and didnt match the car.

I ended up tearing out half my armrest etc and fitting an iPod dock and lead in the armrest cubby.
I then made up a special lead and a switch which fits inside the cubby too so that I can flick between playing from iPod to USB memory stick without unplugging anything.

The guides are really good and tell you all about taking a feed from your fusebox as a permenant live - otherwise your stereo will re-set itself every time you take the key out!  I originally did it using a CanBus adapter which cost me about £70 - but then realised that you can do exactly the same install without it (using the fusebox method).  The CanBus meant not having to cut or interfere with original wiring - but it made a hell of a ticking noise all the time.
