Beefy - just one question - can you put full postcodes into your 510 yet? I've read there's a problem with full postcodes right now...

.... No full postcodes and it calls itself a SatNav!!??

Give me an aftermarket solution every time - They can also be more safely located so the screen is more in vision while driving. And the audio head units are usually better quality.

but with aftermarket, they are more easily removed by thieves!

also the RNS 510 lights up the same as the rest of the dash and doesnt stick out like a sore thumb.

I've found I hardly needed postcode entry anyway, as long as I have the street name and post town.

I dont find tha fact that it does not take full postcodes at the moment a major problem, there does seem to be regular firmware and map updates that should resolve this problem as VW did in Germany.  Also as for it being inferior to aftermarket I'm not so sure.  In my last car I had the Pioneer Avic system, and this one from VW seems to be just as good, infact I think it has a better screen and a much better system of handling the traffic annoucements.  Also Pioneer stopped bringing out map updates after just 2 years, which with all the road 'improvements' happening near me at the moment rendered it out of date pretty quickly.

re: RNS 510, yes maps can be updated.  £200 from a VW dealer, or £100 for same thing off ebay.

re: firmware and map updates solving postcode issue, thats a negative at the mo.  as there is someone over on vwnavi.com who has the latest headunit in a brand new car, with the latest v1000 firmware, only just released, and the dealer could not solve the problem.  we will have to wait maybe 6 months for another firmware update and that might solve it.
I have the latest maps, and that doesn't solve it either.

Yes.

You can update them using the built in SD card slot. I haven't had to yet though.

....That looks both very tidy and secure, Hurdy - Cool stuff. However, I still prefer my SatNav screen to be more in my driving line of sight. Each to their own .

Very cunning Hurdy!

My Pioneer:

Does the surround and tray come with this pioneer unit, or did you have to source them separately? Looks very smart by the way

I have an RNS 510 too - retro fitted.

you cant put full postcodes in, VW doesn't seem to know or care either.
