Has anyone fitted..............
« on: 04 February 2008, 18:05 »
in dash DVD / sat nav units?

As soem may know im looking for a GTI but i think i may be too fussy as i canoot see a single car with the spec i want, the main thing that most GTI's dont have sat nav fitted.  Now i know its petty but i want it because i think that i looks much better than the std stereo so i might as weel look at after market units.

Ive looked on the net but to be honest i know zip about this kinds thing.  :undecided:

Any suggestions?

I've had Pioneer and now Alpine SatNav/Audio touch screen units in my GTI and much prefer the Alpine. I didn't like the Kenwood SatNav interface at the time I first considered such gear. There's nothing to choose between all of them audio quality wise. Alpine have the most experience in SatNav mapping.

We've been considering an upgrade.

The main thing stopping us getting the Kenwood has been the worry of having the car broken into to have it nicked. Are there any units out there with satellite nav and a removable fascia?

The Alpine pictured above wouldn't do the business for us because it looks like it gets in the way of the vents, and we'd prefer it to occupy the place taken by the RCD300 (like the VW oem model)

Hi I've fitted the new RNS 510 from VW.  It was very easy to fit, and gives the full functionality without having to mess around with Vag-com or anything.  It took me about 30mins from start to finish.
Also sounds much better than the standard RCD300.  Not sure about the sat-nav voice though, she sounds very stern
You get a 30Gb hard disk to copy all of your MP3 files onto, it plays DVD's and accepts SD cards through a front slot.  Finally you get to keep that OEM look at it comes direct from VW.
Hope this helps,
Nigel

Beefy - that looks exactly what we want - thanks! One thing I like is the proper buttons at the side, and the fact that it's all lit up in red to match the other lights...

Here's a couple of good threads about the 510:

Going to be adding the "Premium Bluetooth" to it, so I can use my phone through it

Beefy - just one question - can you put full postcodes into your 510 yet? I've read there's a problem with full postcodes right now...
