Doesn't the GLI just have a normal non-injected engine (a 1.5 perhaps) and the GTI obviously has the 8v GTI engine.

Just guessing.

Weren't the earlier cabriolet's GLI? The 'I' would tend to indicate that it is still injection so maybe its down the level of trim :-\

Mine is a GTI (1983) but I'm sure the earlier ones were GLI.

well im pretty sure mines a GTi too. ??? i was worried there for a bit cos elephants database only had GLI cabs for that year. can u imagine the panic i had when i was thinking i didnt even own a GTI.  :o

its a GTI on the log book, a GTI by badge and it flies like a GTI but with the added kit and interior its always gonna play on my mind that im not really 100% about its history. I think a polite letter to Volkswagen might be in order :)

ps. if anyone sees this and knows the difference in spec please post! ty

The GLI models were only on the cabriolets and as a lot have said it was only up to about 82 ish, after that they were rebadged the GTI.

I think it was just a marketing thing by VW, the engine was the same as the then tin top GTI one of 1588cc and it is always this engine which will be denoted as GLI.

I am pretty sure that most GTI models will be 1781cc as the change of engine I think bought about the model designation change from GLI to GTI.
