Golf mk4 LHD BLACK HEADLIGHTS fit RHD?
« on: 30 March 2004, 11:05 »
Theres a few companies selling BLACK headlamps for MK4 golfs but they say that they are for LHD cars! Is it not possible to fit the LHD ones and make them UK legal at all?

Thanks!

As JV said they will fit but the beam will point to the other side of the road which is illegal and you'll not get an MOT. also they have to be E1 marked which a lot of cheap pattern parts arent as it costs money to get the correct testing done.

Go for the RHD ones, might cost more but its less hassle.

why pay when you can diy?? remove lamp units from car, use a heat gun to soften the sealant on the clear lamp cover (after removing clips) then one off clean off all the old sealant on the lamp and the lense, then very carefully using masking tape mask of each individual lamp unit (all four of em!!) then get some black 'pot paint' (motorbike exhaust paint, matt finish in an areosol) and have a few good coats allowing a good 45 mins in between coats, then reassemble the lamp (after removing masking tape) and there you go same effect for about ?5, youll need a good clear adhesive sealant to carefully glue lense back on and then replace the clips,  havent done me self yet but once weather get better they will be done, maybe before newark meet??.......... if i ever get time!!

Dont forget if you use a silicone sealer for any headlight work always use a low modulas, neutral cure one as it doesn't use acetate to set and so doesn't rot the silvering of the reflector.

A word of warning- DO NOT try and split the mk4 lights, they're made by Valeo and use a heat resistant sealant so can't be split using the heat gun or oven method. You WILL end up breaking the glass.

If you have a set of aftermarket Hella branded ones then they will come apart with out too much hassle.

The American ones use a heat sealed silicone and are fitted with clear plastic not glass. They're totally different to the UK ones. Good luck mate ;).
