Price & colour opinions
« on: 31 January 2008, 14:58 »
Hello everyone, just popped in to introduce myself.

I've just joined this fine community as I am about to purchase a Mk V Gti, and I have to say I am impressed with how friendly and helpful everyone is!  I've already posted in the 'newbie' section, so apologies if anyone is reading this for the second time.

I was hoping you could give me your opinions on a few issues.

The car I'm looking at is a tornado red 5 door with leather, armrest and cd multichanger.  It is a Jan '05 with 38k on the clock.  The dealer is looking for £14,750, although he may come down a little (I left the dealership saying I would think about it!)

I just wondered if this is a fair price. I wanted black or grey, but you can't be too picky when buying used!  Are red ones more likely to attract attention (be pulled by cops or have a nail dragged down them), or is that just my conservative father in law's opinion?

Thanks in advance

Hi Nitram,

That price seems very steep indeed to me.

You can pick up a brand new import for another 4 grand.

What wheels has it got? (If it's got the 17" wheels then run away anyway!)

Dealers will always offer at the highest prices they think they can get!

Mine is a Tornado Red 5-door August 05 44,000 miler. No particular problems being red.

Andy B - The alloys are the standard "17's

Thanks for the advice on the price.  I've had Toyotas for the last 4 cars, so I'm not familiar with VW used prices.  I looked on the VW website used cars section and autotrader site, and the price seemed quite good compared to some others, but it is hard to know what a good price is when comparing dealer with dealer.  I know they hold their price well.

I've pretty much convinved myself to go for the car, but don't want to pay over the odds.  Has anyone got an idea of what I should aim at battering the dealer down to?  He's agreed to re-furb the front alloys (£80 each) and I've been offered a reasonable trade in.

If you're doing a trade in that you're happy with then it might change matters. But the 17" wheels look far worse than the Monzas - really, when you see them in the flesh the difference is amazing.

Here's something I saw on  Pistonheads - similar (but a bit better)

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/270744.htm

Private sale - has a new engine (replaced under warranty) and 18" wheels, xenons, winter pack, 6CD changer, leather...

Good luck anyway - I'm sure you'll get a lot out of the car, whichever you go for.

I think you could easily get the same spec car with the upgrade 18"monza 2s for that money and it will look much better. If you buy a golf with 17" monzas after a few months you would regret not getting the bigger wheel.

The best thing to do is look on - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/  and search under the parameters of an equivalent car. Deduct approx £200 for a private car and deduct around £500 for a traders car and you won't be a million miles from the price you should be paying after a little haggling

Oh, and welcome to the MKV forum

....That's right! I ordered 17's but bought some 18's a few months later. No appreciable difference in the ride but they look a zillion times better, especially on red for some reason.
