mechancial problem

evengin guys - youngs guns staring on channel 5 now...
anyhow, i have a problem (i think).

I looked at the golf (mk4) earlier and underneath the engine on the left hand side resting on the floor was a small strip of fabric.  About half an inch wide and it had a different texture on one side to the other.  It seemed attached to something in the engine bay which you cant see when opening the bonnet.

any ideas ?

cheers
