Relay Confusion
« on: 28 March 2004, 19:33 »
Hi Guys

Old hat i know but my 1995 MK3 8v keeps cutting out in the middle of ticking over as it is warming up i have changed relay number 30 and beleive their maybe another relay it could possibly be but my local indepentant VW man says on AGG engine code their is no more relays which could affect this, i thought there were two suspect ones.
1) The fuel pump relay

2) The ECU relay

Is this true....? if so which one have i changed and does anyone have any more ideas.

Thanks

Neil

As far as I know (and I have cutting out problems too) relay 30 is the ECU relay, I changed this and didn't cure it.
Other suspects could be the Hall Sender in the distributor - this means a whole new dizzy (done this on mine: ?200 fitted - didn't cure it).
Crank sensor may be another culpritt (?120 to buy - next on my list to fit).

Mk4 PD150, Jazz Blue, nice! Puts my old Mk3 Gti to shame

Dudes, STOP CHANGING PARTS! (unless you're rich)

Although rebuilding your car from your relays up is an interesting way to go about restoring a car, pay for the diagnostic time once at an ace place and be done with it.  (Can't recommend one unless you're in NY.)

It ain't rockent science and most parts can be tested before replacing them.

Could be something as simple as the fuel pressure regulator or idle stabilizer or vacuum leak, but I would start w/ cleaning the sh!t out of the throttle body, and test the voltage reading on the O2 (see if she's closing loop).
