Engine Revving, Carb problem

Hi, first of all. New here (first post) so hello everyone. oh yeah I love MK2's but not much of a mechanic 

About a week ago the car starting revving when in neutral like my foot was on the accelerator. Initially I checked the accelerator cable to see if it was getting caught or was twisted. This was not the case, my dad then suggested looking at the automatic choke.

I found that when the car starts on the key, a pushrod comes out to give it a bit of gas, this then pops back in after about 4-5 seconds. My problem is, its not popping back in! The part of the carb that does this is called the 3/4 point unit and I think it is a vacumm thats pulls the rod back in. Anyone know how to sort this problem.

Given you as much info as I can. oh yeah its got the pierburg 2E2 Carburettor.

Anyone experienced any problems like this? Any input is greatly appreciated

Ive found a what im looking for. Contacted German and Swedish, they suggested it was the waxstat or pull-down unit. Bit of research and found loads of info.

Anyone with the same problem, this thread should help you out. Ive decided to bodge the job and wedge the push-rod back. NO more high idle speed for me.

Note: Admin, Hope you dont mind me posting a thread to another forum, im sure it can help some other in my situation.

my mate mite hav the same problem with his 1.6mk2 golf and hes just put clipped a set of mole grips where u can adjust acceletor cable in the engine bay

The problem is fairly clear -you both need to replace your POSburg with a nice Weber 32/34DTML.

Your Pierturds are over-complex and to the point that they're worn out, which is why they're dicking about.

So, why a Weber?

They're very simple.

They're more efficient than the Pierburg, you're probably going to get 5-10MPG extra.

They deliver a better mix of fuel to the engine - swap out the carb and bingo - more rev-happy, powerful motor.

Just make sure you use the original inlet hoses and the warm-air flap, or you *might* get carb icing from time to time.

Oh, the whole wax-stat thing - you can get replacements from GSF, but I wouldn't bother..... provided you can use a manual choke..... which you can, right?

no need to replace the carb at all, the 3/4 point unit is easy to diagnose and repair.  Check the 2 electrical valves on the back of the carb,m they should both click with the ignition on.  But my money is on a vac line round the back thats come off, have a look at my pierburg 2e2 faq, its in the garages section

webber cards are NOT more efficient than a working 2e2, in fact if anyhting they are LESS efficient.  its also a myth that they offer better performace
